World no. 2 Daniil Medvedev made his return to the ATP Tour at the Geneva Open after he was sidelined for six weeks following hernia surgery he underwent in April. Medvedev, who was bested by Richard Gasquet in straight sets, spoke to reporters after the match. The Russian tennis star got honest on his clay court form with Roland Garros set to host the French Open in less than a week, as reported by the Associated Press.

“It’s tough. I don’t play my best tennis on clay courts,” Medvedev said. “I kind of need to be in the zone, which I was not today.”

Medvedev said that he “doesn't play his best tennis on clay courts.” That's the spirit, Daniil! In all seriousness, the Russian star knows that historically- particularly in the Grand Slams- his best results have come on the faster hard-court surfaces.

Of his 13 career singles titles, none of them have come on a clay court surface. Medvedev knows that he is generally more of a slow starter on the surface, something that is definitely not ideal, given his lack of time to build up ahead of the French Open.

Fortunately, Medvedev does have one thing working in his favor: his health. The 2021 US Open champion said that “his body feels good” and that with a few more practice sessions, he should be fine for match play at Roland Garros after the long layoff.

Medvedev will have to find his form soon, as this year's French Open field figures to be as tough as any, with stalwarts such as Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic looking like the favorites, with rising star Carlos Alcaraz also in the mix.
