Florida Gators quarterback Anthony Richardson will now stop using the “AR-15” nickname, and for good reason.

Richardson's nickname originated from the initials of his name and his jersey number. Of course for a QB leading a lethal offense, that seems to be an apt nickname. However, amid the recent mass shootings in the United States, the young signal-caller knows he can do better than promote guns with his platform.

On social media, Richardson said that he will no longer be using the said nickname and the scope sign that comes with it. Instead, he'll be going for just AR and his full name while a new logo is in the works.

“After discussions with my family and much thought, I have decided to no longer use the nickname “AR-15” and the current apparel line logo, which features a scope reticle, as part of my branding,” the Gators QB wrote.

“While a nickname is only a nickname and “AR-15″ was simply a representation of my initials combined with my jersey number, it is important to me that my name and brand are no longer associated with the assault rifle that has been used in mass shootings, which I do not condone in any way or form. My representatives and I are currently working on rebranding, which includes the creation of a new logo and transitioning to simply using “AR” and my name, Anthony Richardson.”

Due to the recent mass shootings, highlighted by the Uvalde School shooting and the recent Highland Park attack, Anthony Richardson's decision is understandable. He just wants to do his part in order for people to take gun control seriously.

Considering that Richardson is set to take over the full-time starting job for the Gators, the attention he gets will only increase. With that said, he's taking action to use that platform better.
