At first glance, Tuesday night's game between the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres didn't seem out of the ordinary. The two division rivals clashed for the second time in the 2022 MLB season, with the San Francisco offense exploding for 13 runs in a game that quickly got out of hand. However, MLB history was made during the contest. Giants assistant coach Alyssa Nakken entered the game as the team's first base coach, making history as the first woman to coach on the field during an MLB regular season game. Nakken reacted to the inspirational moment following the game, via ESPN.

“I think we're all inspirations doing everything that we do on a day-to-day basis and I think, yes, this carries a little bit more weight because of the visibility, obviously there's a historical nature to it,” she said. “But again, this is my job.”

Nakken, 31, works with the Giants on baserunning and outfield defense. She was in the batting cage when she heard that she was needed on the field during the Padres game.

Yes, Nakken is “doing her job.” However, this is a significant moment in the MLB's history, especially considering that just four days ago, Rachel Balkovec became the first woman to manage a minor league affiliate team.

A softball star at Sacramento State, Nakken was hired by Giants manager Gabe Kapler back in 2020. Kapler noted how he and the staff had prepared for this moment with Nakken, who spoke of the “great sense of responsibility” she feels as an example towards women everywhere.

With Nakken and Balkovec leading the way, it might not be long before a woman occupies the managerial chair in an MLB dugout.
