New York Giants backup quarterback Kyle Lauletta was arrested Tuesday morning while driving to the team's practice facility in East Rutherford, per Ryan Dunleavy of NJ.com.

Lauletta was taken into custody after he allegedly failed to obey a police officer's directions and came close to striking the officer with his vehicle.

“We are aware of the situation and are in contact with Kyle,” a Giants official said. “We are still gathering information.”

Lauletta was a fourth-round pick by the Giants in this year’s draft. He is currently third in the quarterback depth chart behind Eli Manning and Alex Tanney.

With the Giants now 1-7 and likely in need of a long-term replacement for Manning, there has been growing talk that Lauletta should be given the chance to play during the second half of the season to show if he’s capable of becoming Manning’s heir apparent.

Obviously, it’s pretty bad timing for Lauletta to get himself into trouble just as he’s getting closer to seeing some action for the first time in his NFL career. It remains to be seen what impact, if any, Lauletta’s arrest will have on his ability to see the field in the coming weeks.

The Giants have a bye this week and don't play again until Nov. 12 against the San Francisco 49ers.
