When the New York Giants drafted Daniel Jones sixth overall in 2019, there were a ton of expectations on the young QB. Unfortunately, three years in and Jones has yet to make a significant winning impact on the team.
However, Jones cannot be blamed alone for his struggles. There has been no continuity in the Giants' coaching, and injuries have also been a major hindrance in allowing the 25-year-old QB to unleash his full potential.
All these issues make Golden Tate feel sorry for Jones. The former NFL Pro Bowler knows the youngster has a lot of talent, it's just that he was never put in the position to succeed.
“I honestly feel bad for Daniel,” Tate said, per NJ.com. “He was drafted into a rebuilding organization for one, had Pat Shurmur for a year and then got Joe Judge for two years, now another head coach and another rebuild going into his fourth season. He hasn’t had Saquon [Barkley], myself, [Kenny] Golladay, Sterling [Shepard] – no one is ever on the field at the same time. And then on top of that, he had [Jason] Garrett [as his offensive coordinator] and that probably didn’t help much.
“So you kind of feel bad for him because a ton of talent. He has a lot of talent but he just hasn’t had much help due to injuries and how they set it up.”
With Brian Daboll taking over the Giants as coach, Daniel Jones can only hope that he'll be in a better situation compared to the past three years.
The 2022 season will be critical for Jones, especially since it's his contract year. If he does well, he could convince the Giants that they can out their faith on him as the QB of the future. If he continues to struggle, it could be the end of his time with the franchise.
Hopefully, all the problems Golden Tate mentioned won't be a big issue for Jones and the Giants come the new campaign.
