The New York Giants will be looking for more players to step up as NFL training camp begins this year, and with his second year starting, running back Saquon Barkley aims to be one of the team’s biggest contributors. According to one player on the team, the young running back already has the skills of a leader.

Speaking to the media after their first training camp practice, Giants tight end Evan Engram had nothing but praise for Barkley. Not only did Engram call Barkley a “great athlete,” but he also called the second-year running back a “natural leader” and said that his leadership qualities are what initially stuck out to the tight end.

Although the Giants are now missing superstar wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., the team is still looking to its younger star players to provide a role. After winning the 2018 Rookie of the Year award, the Giants are hoping Barkley can continue his development and rise into one of the best running backs in the league. As it stands, Barkley might have a good chance of doing so, especially if his work ethic and leadership qualities are as good as his teammates say.

During his rookie season, Barkley electrified the field and proved to be worth the early first-round pick the Giants spent on him. He ran for 1,307 yards and 11 touchdowns, and also hauled in 91 receptions for 721 yards, proving to be a force on any end of the offense. Now heading into a second year, Barkley will look to improve all areas of his game, and will likely be asked to do much more now that the team is looking to him to lead.
