Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will reportedly clean house this week, with plans to dismiss the entire coaching staff, including longtime head coach Jason Garrett. One available coordinator will be Kris Richard, a former USC standout cornerback who spent six seasons in the NFL before joining the coaching ranks at his alma mater and later the Seattle Seahawks and most recently Cowboys.

The 40-year-old Super Bowl champion as a defensive backs coordinator with the Seahawks will interview for the vacant head-coaching position of the New York Giants, who let go Pat Shurmur after two unremarkable seasons on the sidelines, according to ESPN's Josina Anderson.

Richard has spent the past two seasons in Dallas as the defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator. While still young, he has a wealth of experience between his playing days and his time with Seattle's “Legion of Boom,” which netted the NFC West franchise's first-ever Lombardi Trophy in 2013-14.

This isn't the first time rumors have made their way through the crossfires between the NFC East division rival Giants and Cowboys. During the 2019 NFL season, when Garrett's job was edging closer to doubtful, reports indicated that New York would be interested in replacing Shurmur with the Cowboys head coach. (Garrett's contract ends after this season, so he wouldn't be fired—just not retained by Jones and Dallas.)

The Giants will have to regroup after a difficult season that at least further embellished the trajectory of the franchise for the immediate franchise: Duke product and former sixth-overall pick Daniel Jones under center and the dynamic star running back Saquon Barkley in the backfield. Perhaps general manager Dave Gettleman sees Kris Richard and his history with Dallas and Seattle as part of that path forward.
