The New York Giants will be shorthanded again on Sunday Night Football against the Dallas Cowboys with linebacker Olivier Vernon set to miss his second straight game.

Vernon injured his ankle on August 26th during practice and still hasn't fully healed from the injury. Earlier this week Giants coach Pat Shurmur said that Vernon would be good to go for this week but the injury didn't improve as the team hoped, and now he will be missing his second straight week. All signs now point to Vernon returning week three when the Giants take on the Houston Texans.

“He did more this week,” coach Pat Shurmur said via ESPN. “He got closer. We haven't seen any setbacks in any way. So we'll be hopeful for next week.”

In Vernon's absence, it should mean more playing time for Connor Barwin and Lorenzo Carter. Barwin played 65 percent of the snaps against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Carter played 35 percent, and that will probably be about the distribution this weekend too.

The defense is going to need to try and be stout against the run this weekend, and it's a significant loss with Vernon not being able to play. The Cowboys like the Jaguars are a team that likes to run the ball a lot which means Barwin and Carter are going to need to step up.

Giants cornerback Janoris Jenkins is expected to play after leaving practice early on Thursday to deal with a personal matter but was practicing with the team on Friday.

“Yeah, everything is good,” Jenkins said before adding, “Short-term memory. In life, things happen; just have to move forward and come back to work and pick up where I left off.”
