Only a few days left before the Rio Olympics, the Venezuelan men’s basketball suffered a huge blow to their campaign.

Lead point guard and Brooklyn Nets player Greivis Vasquez issued a statement on Twitter explaining why he will be missing this year’s games.

Here’s a translated portion of the letter from Vasquez.

The recent turn of events probably hurts the Nets guard as much as his national basketball team is suffering. Venezuela’s participation in Rio marks the first time that they will do so after a 24-year absence.

Venezuela is currently listed at number 22 in the FIBA World Rankings.
