Memphis Grizzlies assistant coach Nick Van Exel has interest in the vacant head-coaching position at the University of Cincinnati, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

The Cincinnati job opened up after Mick Cronin left the school to take the head coaching role at UCLA.

Should Van Exel leave the Grizzlies for Cincinnati, it would mark the second Memphis assistant to depart for a collegiate coaching job in the last week, as Jerry Stackhouse just accepted the head-coaching position at Vanderbilt.

Van Exel has been an assistant coach for the Grizzlies since 2016. He earned his first NBA coaching job back in 2010, when he was named an assistant for the Atlanta Hawks, where he served through 2012. He then became a Milwaukee Bucks assistant for two years.

His only head-coaching experience came with the Texas Legends, the Dallas Mavericks' G-League team, where Van Exel held a post from 2015 through 2016.

As for his experience on the collegiate level, Van Exel served as an assistant at Texas Southern from 2009 through 2010.

Van Exel also had a 14-year NBA playing career, where he spent time with the Los Angeles Lakers, Denver Nuggets, Mavericks, Golden State Warriors, Portland Trail Blazers and San Antonio Spurs.

The bulk of his career came with the Lakers and Nuggets, where he played five and four seasons, respectively.

Overall, Van Exel owns career averages of 14.4 points, 6.6 assists and 2.9 rebounds over 32.9 minutes per game while shooting 40.5 percent from the floor, 35.7 percent from three-point range and 79.4 percent from the free-throw line.

He made one All-Star team back in the 1997-98 campaign.
