Why The Guardians Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Guardians have been great this season with a 43-23 heading into this series. They also just lost a game and broke a three-game winning streak. Their bats are in the middle of the pack, while their pitching has been a top-10 staff. Steven Kwan, Jose Ramirez, Andres Gimenez, Tyler Freeman, and Josh Naylor have carried the Guardians on offense. Tanner Bibee, Triston McKenzie, and Ben Lively have held down the fort in the pitching staff despite Shane Bieber getting Tommy John Surgery. They have been one of the best teams in the MLB this season, and not just the AL.

The Guardians are starting Carlos Carrasco on the mound and he has a 2-5 record, a 5.50 ERA, and a 1.44 WHIP. Carrasco has allowed 35 runs on 59 hits with 19 walks and 42 strikeouts through 54 innings. In his 11 starts, the Guardians are 4-7. Carrasco has had a rough season so far in Cleveland. However, the Blue Jays have struggled behind the plate this season, so it fares well for him in this matchup.

The Guardians are a talented team behind the plate but cooled off recently. They are 16th in team batting average at .238 after finishing last season at .259. The offense is led by Jose Ramirez in almost every batting category. Ramirez leads the way in batting average at .275, in home runs at 18, in RBI at 62, in OBP at .336, and in hits at 69. This offense has shown flashes, but they get a difficult matchup against Nick Lodolo with how well he has played this season.

Why The Blue Jays Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Blue Jays have been inconsistent to start the season towards a 33-35 record. However, they have won five out of their last six games leading into this series. The team has struggled behind the plate with their bats and then their pitching has also struggled, with both being in the bottom half of the MLB this season. Daulton Varsho, Justin Turner, Bo Bichette, George Springer, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. have stood out behind the plate, while Jose Berrios and Yusei Kikuchi have been their best pitchers up to this point in the season. Toronto has the talent, but they have not found any consistency up to this point in the season.

The Blue Jays have not announced who they are starting yet, but based on schedule it could be Jose Berrios on the mound where he has a 5-5 record, a 2.93 ERA, and a 1.10 WHIP. Through 86 innings, he has allowed 28 runs on 73 hits with 22 walks, and 64 strikeouts. He is 9-5 in his 14 appearances this season. This will be a favorable matchup for him if he plays because the Guardians are around average on offense. There is also a chance the Blue Jays go with their bullpen in this game as well if not Berrios.

The offense for the Blue Jays has struggled towards a .232 which is 21st in the league, after finishing last season with a .256 batting average. Daulton Varsho, Vladimir Guerrero Jr, and Davis Schneider lead the team in almost every important batting category. Guerrero Jr. leads the way in batting average at .281, in OBP at .370, and in total hits at 73. Varsho then leads the way in home runs at 10 and Schneider leads in RBI at 32. This offense has struggled across the board but this matchup against Carlos Carrasco helps because he has been the weak link in a usually great Cleveland pitching staff.

Final Guardians-Blue Jays Prediction & Pick

This game becomes a pitching duel because neither team has been impressive behind the plate. The Guardians are the better and deeper team on offense, but not by much. The Blue Jays will have the pitching advantage if they go with Berrios or if they go bullpen-heavy due to the struggle of a season Carrasco has had with the Guardians. Expect the Blue Jays to cover and potentially win at home against the Guardians.
