A little vino for the boys never hurt anyone. Back in February, Baxter Holmes of ESPN wrote a piece chronicling the NBA's obsession with wine. It surprised many fans to hear that players had grown so fond of it.

Dwyane Wade spoke with Lexi Williams of Wine Spectator to discuss the growing popularity of wine throughout the NBA. When asked why wine has become so popular among NBA players, Wade had this to say:

“When I first got into the NBA, the cool thing was Patrón [Tequila]—everybody did Patrón. Right now, you've got the older guys—myself, the Carmelos, the LeBrons—who have gravitated toward wine. So it's our job to now educate the next generation on things, just like with fashion, and that's where it's at right now. It's definitely taken over the NBA.”

NBA players tend to have the utmost respect for the superstars of the league. Guys like Wade, LeBron James, and Carmelo Anthony are held in high regard among players.

It just so happens that they are respected enough to influence NBA players' drink of choice. But it's hard to blame players for this shift towards merlot, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc. No matter what food you're eating, there's a wine out there to complement the meal.

A nice Chianti goes well with Italian food. If you're having a steak, you can't go wrong with a glass of Merlot. Or if you're looking to stay healthy, Chardonnay and grilled salmon are a perfect match.

Wade and company have ushered the NBA into the wine era and they've made a wise choice.
