The Chicago Bears are excited for the 2024 NFL season. They have remade their offense this offseason by adding Caleb Williams, D'Andre Swift, Rome Odunze, and Keenan Allen to an already solid core of talent. New offensive coordinator Shane Waldron has everything he needs to cook opposing defenses. However, it does take time for a new cast of characters to gel together and learn to work as one unit. This is especially true when you have a rookie quarterback. According to reports, Caleb Williams look like a rookie at today's OTA practice.
Multiple sources report that Caleb Williams, and the entire Bears offense, struggled mightily in today's OTA practice.
The practice was reportedly filled with incomplete passes and near interceptions. Williams only completed three passes during the entire 7-on-7 period and threw an ugly interception over the middle of the field to Jaylon Johnson.
Reporters also noted that Williams held onto the ball for a long time during the team period of practice, only completing short passes to the flat.
Bears coach Matt Eberflus didn't sound worried after practice.
“We’re not holding back,” Eberflus said. “We’re giving him a lot of information. We’re giving him the whole offense.”
It should not be too surprising that Williams struggled in practice.
Williams is a rookie QB who is adjusting to the NFL game. That transition requires an adjustment period.
It is also important to note that the Bears were without two starting offensive linemen, as well as starting wide receivers Keenan Allen and Rome Odunze.
This also feels like a common NFL trope. Defenses always have the advantage in the beginning of offseason activities in the NFL. It is much easier to succeed as a defense when the offense you're playing against hasn't developed chemistry and is still learning a new playbook.
Despite their history, Bears have set Caleb Williams up for success in rookie season
Don't panic yet Bears fans.
There are a number of reasons why fans could be suspect of Caleb Williams and the Bears in the 2024 season. After all, the Bears have a history of failing to develop a franchise QB. Both Justin Fields and Mitchell Trubisky flopped in recent history. The franchise also has some of the lowest franchise passing records in the entire league due to their perennial lack of a star QB.
Normally the first overall pick goes to a really bad team — the Panthers are a great example. This is not the case with the Bears.
In fact, the Bears are probably in the best situation that they have been in quite a long time.
To start, Williams is a great prospect who is dripping with upside and hopefully a high floor. He is surrounded by an impressive cast of offensive weapons and a solid offensive line that is constantly improving. The Bears' offense also has the luxury of leaning on a talented defense that can reliably bail them out should they make mistakes.
The Bears organization appears to have learned from their past and given Caleb Williams everything he needs to succeed.
