According to the Celtics, Kyrie Irving is set to undergo a minimally invasive knee procedure to to alleviate irritation in his left knee, with no timetable set for return.

So what does this mean?

Firstly, we know Kyrie has been dealing with knee soreness and irritation all season. This doesn’t surprise me considering he suffered a fractured patella on the same knee – the repair can change some of the loading and stress that goes through the knee. As my professor used to say “it’s never the same model”. This can cause irritation in certain tissues. Even Danny Ainge has mentioned that Kyrie would need a follow-up procedure at some point.

There isn’t any specific information being released about the surgery but based on “minimally invasive” and the no set timetable for return, my educated guess is that he will be undergoing an exploratory arthroscopic knee surgery.

This surgery entails making a small incision and inserting a camera into the knee. The surgeon investigates the knee joint and structures to figure out what’s wrong.

Those findings will inform the plan and timetable moving forward.
