It's Week 1 of the 2021 NFL preseason and it means a lot of things. Among which is that it's now the perfect time for fans to manufacture overreactions over singular plays in a random game that's basically equivalent to a glorified scrimmage contest. Take for example Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields, who may or may not look like the next coming of Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes during a 20-13 home win over the Miami Dolphins Saturday afternoon.

Justin Fields, who was taken 11th overall by the Bears in the 2021 NFL Draft, had a field day slicing through the Fins' defense. Sure, the Dolphins had second and third-stringers on the field for most of the game, but there has to be some respect on Miami's stop unit that was among the best in the NFL a season ago. (Miami was fourth in scoring defense in 2020.) That did not matter to Justin Fields. The former Heisman Trophy finalist passed for 142 yards and a touchdown (to tight end Jesse James) with zero interceptions while completing 14 of 20 passes.

In addition to that, Fields kept Miami defenders on their feet by constantly threatening them with his ability to tuck the ball and run with it. Justin Fields finished with 33 rushing yards and a touchdown on just five rushing attempts. Sweet.

Justin Fields looked very good, to say the least in his debut for the Bears in a competitive setting. Bears fans deserve that performance and certainly have earned their rights to overreact to it given how unstable the quarterback position has been for Chicago over the last handful of seasons. Mitchell Trubisky was thought to be the answer under center for the Bears but trading up to pick him third overall in 2017 — seven picks before the Chiefs took Mahomes — completely blew up in their faces.

This time, the Bears want to take things easy with Fields. Andy Dalton will be the starter in Week 1 of the 2021 NFL regular season, but performances like that one against Miami by Justin Fields should only heighten up the excitement again in Windy City.
