If the Jacksonville Jaguars want to contend in 2020 and beyond, they must do well in the offseason. What's the first step in doing so? Resigning one of their own.

On Tuesday, Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell revealed his team's No. 1 offseason priority is resigning defensive end Yannick Ngakoue, who is slated to become a free agent in March barring an extension or franchise tag.

I think you guys all know in this room how both Doug and I feel about Yannick through our conversations over the years,″ Caldwell said Tuesday, via James Johnson of Jaguars Wire. ″He is a tremendous player and even a better person. How he handled his business this year was tremendous. But I would say that’s priority No. 1 to make sure he comes back to Jacksonville and that he’s a Jacksonville Jaguar. Hopefully, we can get that done where he’s here for a long period of time.″

Since they drafted him in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft out of Maryland, Ngakoue has been an integral part of the Jaguars' high-tier pass-rush. In starting all but one of his 63 career games, he has 37.5 sacks, 85 quarterback hits, 122 combined tackles and 42 tackles for loss. He tallied eight sacks, 15 quarterback hits, 13 tackles for loss and 41 combined tackles in 2019.

At 24 years old, Ngakoue, a 2017 Pro Bowler, will be a hot commodity on the open market, as all young standout pass rushers tend to do. If the Jaguars want him to be a part of their plans moving forward, they will have to bring out the Brinks Truck.
