Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer confirmed Thursday night that wide receiver DJ Chark broke his left ankle in the brutal 24-21 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. NFL Network's Ian Rapaport is now reporting Friday morning that Chark is expected to undergo surgery and miss the rest of the 2021 season.

Here's Rapaport on the injury:

Chark suffered the injury early in the game. His leg was rolled up on by both his own lineman and running back as he was blocking on the outside. The 25-year-old wideout couldn't put any weight on his left foot and had to be carted off the field.

If Chark's season is indeed over, the Jaguars wide receiver finishes an abbreviated 2021 campaign with seven catches for 154 yards and two touchdowns. A season-ending injury is bad at any time, but this is especially tough timing in a contract season.

Chark has been with the Jaguars for the entirety of his four-year career after getting picked in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. The wide receiver had a quiet rookie season before breaking out as a sophomore, catching 73 passes for 1,008 yards and eight scores. He took a slight step back last season, hauling in 53 passes for 706 yards and five touchdowns.

Thursday was a rough night overall for Jacksonville. The Jaguars not only lost Chark but blew a 14-0 halftime lead to fall to 0-4 on the season. Rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence has now lost as many games in the NFL as he did in his entire high school and college careers combined.
