The New York Jets got a new weapon for young quarterback Sam Darnold this offseason when they signed Tampa Bay Buccaneers wideout Breshad Perriman to a one-year deal worth $8 million.

With the Jets losing their No. 1 receiver in Robby Anderson to the Carolina Panthers, Jets head coach Adam Gase is expecting Perriman to be an explosive option for a team that desperately needs it.

“I’m excited to see what he can do in this offense,” Gase said on Monday per USA Today's Tyler Calvaruso. “His skill set fits in well with what we do. We feel like he can do multiple things for us. He can create explosive plays. He can do some good stuff after the catch.”

Perriman, a former first-round pick out of UCF, had failed to live up to expectations in his first three seasons. However, after signing with the Bucs during the 2019 offseason, the 26-year-old pass-catcher enjoyed the best season of his young career.

While Perriman only started four of the 14 games he appeared in; the new Jets receiver still managed to record 36 catches for 645 yards and six touchdowns — all of which are career highs.

“It’s going to be about getting him caught up as fast as possible,” Gase said. “Making sure that whenever the time comes we can get on the grass, that he’ll be able to go and play fast,” Gase added.

Perriman will join a New York receiver group that features Jamison Crowder, Quincy Enunwa, and 2020 second-round pick Denzel Mims.
