The New York Jets are getting closer to naming a general manager. Monday, the team will complete its interviews with Chicago Bears exec Champ Kelly.

Kelly dined with Jets brass last night and is having his formal interview today, per Albert Breer of SI.com. It's the fourth and final interview for the Jets, after Eagles exec Joe Douglas, Seahawks exec Scott Fitterer, and Saints exec Terry Fontenot. While Kelly will be making his case today, it's unlikely he'll be able to sway them.

Douglas has emerged as a heavy favorite, and the reporting has been consistent that it'll be a significant shock if anyone other than Douglas gets the job. The Philly exec has a relationship with new Jets coach Adam Gase, and Gase apparently prefers him. It seems very unlikely that Jets owner Christopher Johnson would deny him his guy.

But that doesn't mean this is a waste of time, because Kelly could end up joining the front office anyway. Albert Breer of SI.com writes:

“There’s a belief in scouting circles that if Kelly doesn’t get the GM job, he could still land in Jersey working under Douglas.”

Some also view Kelly as next in line if something were to go disastrously wrong with Douglas' negotiations. It also sounds like there's a strong possibility Kelly joins the front office as a top deputy to Douglas. Kelly was with the Bears while Adam Gase was the offensive coordinator in Chicago, so there's some familiarity and a working relationship there.
