New York Jets kicker Chandler Catanzaro has suddenly retired, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday morning. Catanzaro, 28, spent last season with the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers after playing for the Jets in 2017 and Arizona Cardinals for three seasons prior to his first stint in New York.

In a corresponding move, the Jets signed former AAF kicker Taylor Bertolet. The undrafted free agent out of the 2016 class had short stints with the Los Angeles Rams and Denver Broncos before the Jets brought him in last offseason, where he would lose the starting kicker job to Jason Myers in training camp and be released in September 2018. After that, Bertolet went to the AAF to play with the Salt Lake Stallions.

Following the AAF's rapid closure, Bertolet headed to training camp with the Broncos again but was released by the Denver franchise but was released in July. Now the Jets have brought the kicker back into their camp.

Catanzaro, meanwhile, had been struggling both in practice and New York's first preseason game, a 31-22 loss to the other MetLife occupant New York Giants. The Clemson product entering his sixth NFL season missed two extra points in the exhibition game in East Rutherford, New Jersey, while connecting on a 34-yard field goal. Catanzaro had been the only placekicker new general manager Joe Douglas had brought into training camp, so his loss required signing another special teams player in Bertolet.

The Jets failed to re-sign Myers in the offseason following his impressive 2018 season, which totaled 33/36 field goals and 30/33 extra points en route to his first Pro Bowl selection.

Catanzaro for two teams last season tallied 16/20 field goals and 30/35 extra points.
