A lot is riding on the shoulder of New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson. Selected second overall — behind Trevor Lawrence — in the 2021 NFL Draft, Wilson is expected to start right away for the Jets, wh are hoping that he is the franchise’s long-term answer to its quarterback quandaries.

Of course, it’s not going to be smooth all the way for Wilson, especially in his first year as a pro. The growing pains for a rookie in the NFL can be particularly brutal to a quarterback, and it did not take Wilson long before he experienced that with the Jets.

In the Jets’ Green & White practice attended by almost 20,000 fans Saturday night at MetLife Stadium, Wilson put up a dud, as he threw two picks and steered the offense to just a total of three points in seven possessions. There’s not much to be surprised about that. Again, these bummers are part of a rookie’s learning curve in the pros, but at the same time, it’s not a stretch to imagine that some impatient Jets fans are already thinking that the team had wasted a high pick on Wilson.

But at least, it seems that Wilson’s head is in the right place after that performance for the Jets.

Via Rich Cimini of ESPN:

“Not great,” he said of his night. “I have high expectations for myself and this offense. I have to lead the guys and I have to make better decisions. That's why this isn't Game 1; that's why we're doing this. I understand that. Of course I'm going to be frustrated with myself, but I'm going back to the film room and find out what I can learn.”

With an inexperienced quarterback and a new head coach and a fresh offensive coordinator, there are a lot of unknowns about the Jets’ immediate future, but there’s no way but only up for New York’s attack that finished last in the NFL last season in scoring offended, total offense, points per play, and yards per play.
