Pro Bowl quarterback Kirk Cousins is just a couple of weeks away from hitting the free agent market for the first time in his NFL career.

Cousins will have a long list of potential suitors looking to acquire his services that will include the New York Jets. With that in mind, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk has voiced that there is reason to believe that the Jets may be the only team at this point willing to offer the 29-year-old a fully guaranteed long-term deal.

“With Cousins rocketing toward the open market (efforts by his current team to conjure up a way to trade him notwithstanding), the question becomes whether the next contract he signs will be fully guaranteed, for the full duration of its four, five, or six years.

One team already is being pegged in league circles as having the willingness to do it: The Jets. If the Jets will do it, other suitors for Cousins may have no choice but to follow suit.”

New York is projected to have more than $73 million in salary cap space this upcoming offseason, which gives them the ability to offer a deal with a lucrative annual salary to Cousins' preference. At the same time, the organization holds significant interest to finally get a bonafide starting quarterback under center after yet another disappointing season missing the playoffs for the seventh consecutive years.

Cousins has shown to be a capable starting quarterback over the last few seasons posting 4,000 passing yards with at least 25 touchdowns and a passer rating above 90 in each of the last three campaigns. He is also coming off another highly productive year where he threw for 4,093 yards on a 64.3 percent completion percentage with 27 touchdown passes to 13 interceptions and 93.9 passer rating.

The major push by New York may complicate the situation with several teams around the league expected to be in the mix to land Cousins that should ramp up the offers presented to him. Ultimately, things could get quite interesting once the free agency period begins next month.
