It seems like Teddy Bridgewater may have to wait longer before he reclaims a regular starter status. Even though he just signed a one-year deal with the New York Jets, who are in dire need of a new signal-caller, Bridgewater might start the 2018 season as a backup to Josh McCown.

According to a report by Calvin Watkins of Newsday, a source has told him that McCown is being groomed once again to be the Jets’ starter.

McCown signed a one-year deal worth $6 million with the Jets last season, but has parlayed a strong 2017 performance into another – and bigger – deal with New York, as the veteran quarterback has just agreed to one-year, $10 million contract with the team.

Josh McCown had an impressive 2017, considering the state of the Jets. At age 38, McCown was able to stitch together his best season as a professional, coming up with career-best figures of 2,926 passing yards, 18 passing touchdowns, and a 67.3 completion percentage.

If it weren’t for him, the Jets would have finished that season in a deeper level of mediocrity. McCown was also largely responsible for making a rising star out of wide receiver Robbie Anderson, who had an impressive 2017 campaign himself.

With McCown under center, the Jets found a way to eke out a 5-8 record, which was a lot better than what most people expected prior the 2017 campaign. McCown, however, did not finish the season because of a hand injury, in December that dampened his future with the Jets and in the league as well. He defied all that, though, and at age 39, McCown gets a crack to be relevant again.
