The Washington Commanders are entering the 2021-22 campaign after an eventful offseason. Washington has offseason drama with owner Daniel Snyder facing allegations of sexual assault and harassment.

This is a serious matter and will be a major storyline for the Commanders.

However, while Washington waits for news on Snyder's situation, they need to focus on building up a successful football team.

The Commanders will have a new quarterback in the coming season after trading for Carson Wentz. Wentz has not been the same QB since he suffered a torn ACL during his breakout campaign in 2017.

He has shown flashes of being great over the past few seasons but is prone to turnovers. Wentz threw for 3,563 yards for 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He fumbled eight times, with five being recovered by the opposing defense. While he can still be a great player, Washington needs to try to limit his out-of-control plays that often result in turnovers.

The Commanders could have a bounce-back season and make it to the playoffs. They have a talented enough roster, as long as Wentz can play at a high level.

With that said, here is the key Commanders position to make the biggest impact in the 2022 NFL season.

Defensive Line

Washington's defensive line is among the best in the league. They have an emerging superstar in Chase Young, who has proven to be a great young pass rusher. Young had his season cut short in 2021 after suffering a torn ACL against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 10.

Young coming back from injury will be a big boost to the defense for Washington.

Montez Sweat is on the other edge and has shown promise in his first three seasons. Although he hasn't become a star, he has made an impact, with 21 sacks and forced seven fumbles in his career.

A breakout star for the defensive line last season was Jonathan Allen. The defensive tackle posted a career-high nine sacks and earned his first Pro Bowl nod. Allen's play is important in the middle and elevates the pass rushers on the edge of the defensive line.

The other defensive tackle next to Allen is Daron Payne. Payne is a solid defensive tackle who finished with 4.5 sacks, and 15 quarterback hits last season. While he is not an elite presence, he provides stability as the second defensive tackle.

Having a top-tier defensive line can do wonders in helping win football games. For example, the Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams had a tremendous defensive line that forced pressure onto opposing quarterbacks. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was sacked seven times in the Super Bowl, which helped propel Los Angeles to win the game.

The Commanders have all the tools and pieces to make a similar impact against opposing offenses. Getting the full potential out of the defensive line will take pressure off the secondary, as they will not have to cover as long. It will also help the offense, as they can force more stops and get more opportunities for the offense to score.

Washington will have an uphill climb to make the postseason. They have upgraded their roster this offseason, but the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys were already playoff teams last season.

It won't be easy, but the defensive line could lead the Commanders to the playoffs.
