Kingdom Hearts 4 gets formally announced by Square Enix during the 20th Anniversary celebration – and we get a first glimpse at what Sora will look like in the newest game in the series.

Kingdom Hearts celebrated its 20th anniversary with a flurry of new announcements and trailers – one of which is an important addition to its long-running franchise of action RPGs. Kingdom Hearts 4 gets officially unveiled by Square Enix – letting us know that there's more of this series from where it came from.

Kingdom Hearts 4 Trailer in the Kingdom Hearts 20th Anniversary Celebration

The Kingdom Hearts 4 reveal trailer re-introduces us to Sora – who appears to have been asleep for a long time and is now in a new world called Quadratum – an afterworld for people like Sora and The Organization XIII. We also got a first look at Goofy and Donald Duck, who appears to have been separated from Sora.

The trailer showcases a brand-new look for Sora and the crew – likely thanks to the game using the Unreal Engine 5 engine in its development. The use of the next-gen engine also helps it innovate even more in its traversal and combat – and we do hope that those swift movements by Sora in the trailer is more than just trailer bait. We expect more mobility in the upcoming game once it finally comes out!

Kingdom Hearts 4 Release Date: TBD

Sadly, the announcement trailer didn't give us a release date for Kingdom Hearts 4. We also don't know yet which consoles will carry this game, but it'll most likely be available for current-gen and previous-gen machines. While we hope that details about this new project come soon, we've seen how big games get announced or revealed and fade away to the background for years before they get talked about again. We hope that it won't be the case for this one, but we'd be ready to hear a 2026 release date from Tetsuya Nomura and the rest of the crew over at Square Enix eventually.
