After missing out on stars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in free agency, the New York Knicks used their cap space on Julius Randle, Bobby Portis, Taj Gibson, Marcus Morris, Wayne Ellington, Elfrid Payton, and Reggie Bullock. The Knicks have been a walking disaster for years under owner James Dolan. Some around the league believe NBA commissioner Adam Silver has to step in and fix the Knicks.

However, Silver says he has no plans to do that. He also talked about big time free agents refusing to play in New York despite its big market reputation.

“I’m not sure,” the commissioner said on WFAN, via the New York Daily News. “I would just say it would obviously be great in the country’s largest media market to have a high performing team, one that’s winning more games on the floor. But at the same time, increasingly with every game available through digital media, league pass, apps, national broadcasts – I think the market is less significant than it used to be. All things being equal, sure you’d like to see big city teams be successful. At the end of the day, you want to see teams compete the best they can.

“I think what’s healthy for the league is for players not to have the sense that they need to be in certain markets in order to be successful. And honestly that hurts the Knicks in certain ways. Because a player now realizes they can be in Indiana or San Antonio and Oklahoma City — and if their team is winning, they’re going to be globally famous and all the endorsements will follow. And I think back in the day there were much larger economic differences between being successful in New York and being successful in a smaller market.”

Knicks president Steve Mills and general manager Scott Perry addressed the media for several minutes before Fizdale’s press conference following the team’s home loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Nov. 10. Mills said he and Perry weren’t happy with how things were going, saying he expected the Knicks to be better.

It appears head coach Davis Fizdale could eventually be the fall guy in New York, even though guys like RJ Barrett and Bobby Portis have showed their support for Fizdale.
