The New York Knicks have signed free agent point guard Trey Burke, the team announced on Wednesday. The Knicks roster now stands at the maximum of 20, and Burke is expected to compete against veterans Jarrett Jack and Ramon Sessions for a spot at the point. New York will be forced to waive or trade a guaranteed contract in order to add Burke to the preliminary roster, according to ESPN Insider Bobby Marks.

Burke was one of the many prospects the team looked at during the summer while searching for viable options at the position.

The former Michigan Wolverine will reunite with former college mate Tim Hardaway Jr., whom he spent both of his seasons at Ann Arbor.

Burke is a 39 percent career field goal shooter, but one that saw his efficiency improve in limited minutes with the Washington Wizards last year, after spending his first three seasons with the Utah Jazz. The 24-year-old was mire in a deep reserve role, averaging only 5.0 points and 1.8 assists per game through 12.3 minutes per game, shooting an improved 45.5 percent from the field and 44.3 percent from beyond the arc.

New York is looking for options to divvy up minutes with rookie Frank Ntilikina after missing out in all the top prospects at the position. The Knicks signed restricted free agent Hardaway to a whopping four-year, $71 million deal earlier on the summer, capsizing their ability to make additional signings.
