The Connecticut Sun were one of the better teams in the WNBA last season. They finished third in the league standings by five whole games (27-13) over fourth-place Dallas (22-18). While the WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces and runner-up New York Liberty were clearly the two best teams in the league last year, Connecticut was easily the best of the rest. It will be difficult for this team to make the WNBA Finals in 2024, but the Sun will be a heavy favorite to reach the semifinal round of the playoffs. In the 2024 season opener, Connecticut looked like the good team it was a year ago. The Sun polished off the Indiana Fever by 21 points, pulling away in the fourth quarter for a comfortable win. Connecticut had a really good defense last season, so it has to be a source of encouragement for the Sun that they were able to score 92 points in their season opener and show that they can thrive at both ends of the court.
The Washington Mystics didn't get a season-opening win on Tuesday, but they did battle the New York Liberty on relatively even terms. The Mystics actually led by eight points after three quarters, but they faded in the fourth, getting outscored 26-13 by New York in an 85-80 loss. Washington did force 18 New York turnovers and held the Liberty to 29-percent shooting from 3-point range (8 of 28). The Mystics, however, could not parlay a plus-10 advantage in field goal attempts into more points. The Mystics attempted 78 field goals compared to just 68 for the Liberty, but they actually made fewer shots (31) than New York did (32). Not finishing enough plays and not getting much of any offense in the fourth quarter caught up with Washington. The Mystics played a 30-minute game. They will try to play a 40-minute game against Connecticut on Friday.

Why The Mystics Could Cover The Spread
Washington did cover the spread against the powerful New York Liberty. The Connecticut Sun are a good team, but they're not as good as the Liberty. Washington should feel confident after its season opener. The Mystics did a lot of good things against a formidable opponent but couldn't close the door in the fourth quarter. As long as Washington can finish the job in this game, playing a solid fourth quarter on top of the first three quarters, it should be able to stay close enough to cover against a Connecticut team whose win over the Indiana Fever looks less impressive in light of Thursday night's 36-point loss by the Fever against the Liberty. Washington's loss to New York actually looks better after seeing the Liberty crush the Fever.
Why The Sun Could Cover The Spread
The Sun are at home against an inferior opponent. Connecticut should be able to grow into the season and get better as it moves along. Washington might not be able to replicate the effort it put forth against the Liberty a few days ago. It can all lead to a blowout win for the Sun.
