Stefan Bondy of New York Daily News reports that the New York Knicks are interested in calling up G League star Trey Burke. He was signed by the Knicks on October 11, 2017, but released just three days later. He now plays for the Westchester Knicks, New York's affiliate G League team. Burke is averaging 27.3 points, 5.3 assists and 2.0 steals while shooting 49.4 percent from the field and 42.4 percent from behind the 3-point line in 24 games at the G-League.

The biggest concern for the Knicks is they would need to open a roster spot to call up Burke. Teams need an available roster spot to call up G League players or to sign players to 10-day contracts, which will be available starting Friday. If the Knicks do not hurry and call up Burke soon, any team with an available roster spot can do so.

The Knicks' options to open a roster spot include waiving starting point guard Jarrett Jack, who is playing under a non-guaranteed deal (until Jan. 7), or waiving low used point guard Ramon Sessions, who signed a guaranteed 1-year deal with the Knicks and has appeared in only 13 games this season. The Knicks would prefer to avoid waiving players on guaranteed deals, as they already did with Mindaugas Kuzminskas earlier this season. Waiving a guaranteed deal counts a part of that deal against the salary cap. A trade might be the best way to open up a spot, and it is reported that the Knicks have shopped center Kyle O'Quinn. Burke could really help a Knicks team with struggling point guard issues.

The 25-year-old Burke previously had stops with the Utah Jazz and the Washington Wizards. Burke is mostly known for his scoring. If the Knicks decide not to add him to their team, it is likely that another team soon gives him an opportunity in the form of a 10-day contract, and if he plays well he could eventually get a deal for the rest of this season.
