Los Angeles Lakers Dennis Schroder is downplaying the extent of the ankle injury he suffered in his third preseason game in L.A.

Schroder exited Wednesday night's tune-up game against the Phoenix Suns — a 112-107 Lakers win — after rolling his ankle.

After the game, Lakers head coach Frank Vogel said Schroder has a “mild” sprain of his left ankle. Vogel was non-committal about the point guard's chances to play in L.A.'s preseason finale on Friday, also vs. Phoenix.

Schroder didn't seem to think too much of the injury, either. He said the ankle felt  “pretty good” after icing it and is “nothing to worry about,” per ESPN's Dave McMenamin.

The defending champions traded for the 27-year-old in November in an effort to boost the team's depth and perimeter playmaking.

Dennis Schroder averaged 18.9 points in 65 games (two starts) for the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2019-20, and finished second in the Sixth Man of the Year voting. The winner of the award, Montrezl Harrell, was also acquired by the Lakers in November.

Upon his arrival in Lakers camp, Schroder made it clear that he wanted to be in the team's starting lineup:

“I did this off the bench stuff already for two years with OKC,” Schroder said. “I think I will try to move forward, and I think with A.D. [Anthony Davis] and LeBron, I can be helpful as a starter at the PG position so that LeBron don’t have so much stuff in his mind.”

However, Vogel said he had still not made any decisions on Schroder's role, as recently as Wednesday. It's unclear if Dennis Schroder's ankle sprain will affect his role when the Lakers open the season on Dec. 22.
