The Los Angeles Lakers ended the year with quite a bang as they took out Damian Lillard and the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday. LeBron James had arguably his best performance of the season as he led LA to a 139-106 blowout win over Portland.

The Lakers have shown some signs of life of late by winning two out of their last three games, and at this point, it sounds like head coach Frank Vogel is ready to commit to a major tactical decision involving LeBron and Anthony Davis moving forward (h/t Jovan Buha of The Athletic):

LeBron started at center on Friday against the Blazers and he managed to rack up a season-high 43 points on 16-of-26 shooting. The four-time league MVP also logged 14 boards, four assists, two steals, two blocks, and zero turnovers in just 29 minutes of action. Incidentally, James also served as the Lakers' starting center on Tuesday when they scored a victory over the Houston Rockets.

Anthony Davis recently suffered an MCL sprain on his left knee and LA will hope to get him back some time in January. Once he returns, it sounds like he's going to playing a lot of minutes at the five spot for the rest of the way. As Vogel hinted in his statement above, LeBron will likely split minutes at center with Davis.

This appears to be bad news for Dwight Howard and DeAndre Jordan, who are both likely to lose minutes with this major tactical change. Both players haven't exactly made a significant impact on the Lakers this season and with the trade deadline approaching, it would not be surprising if one of them ends up following in Rajon Rondo's footsteps in a move away from Hollywood.

At this point in the season, there's no denying that the Lakers are feeling a bit desperate. Their campaign thus far has been disappointing, to say the least, and coach Vogel continues to experiment on his lineups to try and find a formula that works. Could this decision to use AD and LeBron as their primary centers be the key to LA's success in the second half of the season?
