The Los Angeles Lakers' disappointing season is nearing its end, with the team already out of play-in contention after Tuesday night's loss to the Phoenix Suns. Frankly, the Lakers didn't exactly deserve a shot at being in the playoffs after such a distraught campaign, with the Russell Westbrook experiment proving to be a huge failure.

While injuries played a part in LA's struggles, one of their biggest problems was their inability to play defense. Head coach Frank Vogel highlighted just that on Tuesday to The Athletic's Bill Oram:

“The habit building, there was a lot to make up with,” Vogel said. “Guys that did not have great defensive habits. You know what I mean? So you coach it on a daily basis and push them to be accountable. But there was just a lot to overcome with this year’s team.”

The Lakers aren't exactly a young roster and their attention to detail on the defensive end is non-existent, ranking 23rd in the league. Vogel also spoke on how the offensive lineups he put on the floor sometimes resulted in problems on the opposite end:

“The nature of how our offensive pieces fit together didn’t allow us to play with a defensive size and positional size that I typically like to have to give us that type of defensive success,” Vogel said. “So there were a lot more smaller lineups to open up the floor because of how our offensive pieces fit. Trying to make the offense work compromised our defense directly.”

Problem is, it wasn't working offensively, either. Other than LeBron James averaging a ridiculous 30.3 points per game, the rest of the rotation didn't show up. Russ was a write-off, while Anthony Davis was injured for most of the campaign.

All in all, it was a miserable season for the Lakers. It will be very interesting to see what happens this offseason, but it seems likely Vogel is fired, even though it's not exactly his fault with how the roster was built.
