As expected, Los Angeles Lakers guard Russell Westbrook opted in on his $47.1 player option Tuesday, despite countless rumors linking him to a trade. Problem is, nobody wanted Westbrook in a trade without the Lakers including draft capital, and they didn't want to do that. Now the franchise is putting out it there that they actually want to see things work out with Russ alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

Via Shams:

Yes, Westbrook struggled immensely in 2021-22 with the Lakers. He turned the ball over at an astounding rate and simply didn't look like a logical fit with Bron and AD. But, we can't forget who Russ is. He's a nine-time All-Star, two-time scoring champ, and a walking triple-double. Last season just didn't go to plan for him.

With a new head coach in Darvin Ham, the hope is Westbrook can bounce back and play a key part in getting the Lakers into the playoffs again. We also have to remember that Davis dealt with countless injuries and James missed time as well. If all three can stay healthy and Russ in particular can find chemistry with his teammates, things could look a lot different in 2022-23.

But if Westbrook falters for a second season in a row, it will be time for LA to move on. Only time will tell. The Lakers are willing to give him another chance to prove himself at least.
