The San Antonio Spurs are expected to negotiate and complete a contract buyout of point guard Goran Dragic in the coming days. Once finalized, it appears that the Los Angeles Lakers will be joining a laundry list of suitors for the 35-year-old Slovenian.

The Lakers are set to jump into the Dragic sweepstakes with a slew of rivals, including the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls, and the Brooklyn Nets.

Dragic, who was traded to the Spurs along with a protected 2022 first-round pick, has only played in five games this season for the Toronto Raptors after being traded there from the Miami Heat this past summer. The Raptors and Dragic mutually agreed to part ways back in November, and Dragic returned to Miami to stay in game-ready form while awaiting a trade. The Raptors would find a willing partner in the Spurs, who will now buy out Dragic and let him test the playoff-contender free agency market.

The recent playoff resume for Dragic should garner a good deal of interest, as he averaged 19 points over 16 games on the Miami Heat's 2020 Eastern Conference Championship run. With the limited talent in the current buyout market, a deal with a team like the Lakers should be reached in short order, allowing Dragic the opportunity to possibly play for a trip back to the NBA Finals. An opportunity he would certainly welcome after being sidelined with plantar fasciitis during game one of the 2020 NBA Finals, and missing the remaining five games.

The report of the Lakers being interested in Dragic does come at a unique time, as prior to the NBA trade deadline, rumors began to swirl regarding a potential trade and buyout for current Lakers point guard Russell Westbrook.

Should the Lakers decide to move forward with Dragic, the dynamic in LA will certainly be interesting.
