Boston Celtics fans sweat buckets when superstar guard Kyrie Irving retracted on a previous commitment he made to stay with the historic franchise. Irving publicly said during the Celtics' annual fan fest back in October that he intends to re-sign with the team next summer.

However, in a press conference this past Friday, Irving once again opened the door to a future outside of Boston, when he answered the reporters' question of his previous commitment with the Celtics with a chilling, “Ask me July 1.”

Chilling for Boston fans, that is. But for the rest of the league, it was welcome music to their ears. In fact, Irving's former teammate and mentor LeBron James approves of the comments, per Joe Vardon of The Athletic:

“He handled it great,” James said. “His post interview was great as well. Just a lot of things that’s going on in our league right now, and the one thing you want to focus on is getting that team to place where he wanted it to be, and that’s competing for a championship.”

To be fair, James' comments are true. There is so much going on around the league that stars like Irving and James don't really have much time to speculate and think about what will happen in the future. There is still a lot of basketball left from here until July 1.

Obviously, what has happened since before the season has opened Irving to the possibility of moving elsewhere. And there sure have been a lot of things happening in the NBA, especially in the past two weeks with the Anthony Davis trade rumors.

Surely, whatever happens to the Celtics down the stretch and into the postseason will be a big factor in Irving's decision.

But of course, when one makes past commitments like Irving did in October, then retracts it a few months later, people will remember and take note of that. Thus, fans can't help but look into Irving's statements with a grain of salt, and speculate that he's on his way out.

Remember when Kyrie Irving said to that kid in Cleveland that he'll never leave?
