Los Angeles Lakers star forward LeBron James joined a group of celebrities to shoulder around $27 million in fines and fees to allow felons in Florida to vote.

According to Lawrence Mower and Langston Taylor of the Tampa Bay Times, nearly 13,000 felons could now be eligible to vote due to the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition supported by LeBron and businessman Michael Bloomberg. Other high-profile personalities who gave hefty donations include Michael Jordan and Ariana Grande.

A network of small-dollar donations from average residents in Florida also helped collect millions of dollars. Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York City, raised $16 million alone by calling others to join.

The report added that the would-be felon voters from Hillsborough, Pinellas, Palm Beach, and Polk—four of the biggest counties in Florida—will likely favor Democratic presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden, the candidate LeBron has formally endorsed.

The article said, citing a review, that at least 80% of felons from the aforementioned areas are non-white, including 74% who are black. Those numbers could be significant enough to tip the scales in the polls, especially with Florida being considered a swing state.

LeBron James continues to be one of the leading voices among athletes regarding social injustice, police brutality, and racism. The four-time NBA MVP also formed an organization called More Than A Vote, which aims to fight racist voter suppression in different communities. Other NBA stars like Chris Paul, Trae Young, Carmelo Anthony, Draymond Green, and Damian Lillard and big-name athletes like Patrick Mahomes, Odell Beckham Jr., and DeAndre Hopkins to name a few have also thrown in their support.

Their main initiative is to encourage everyone, including felons, to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming US election.
