Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James and owner Jeanie Buss had a private dinner in March 2019 in which they talked at length about the state of the franchise and the future, per Ramona Shelburne of ESPN. James' agent, Rich Paul, was also at the meeting.

It was notable since James had never done this before with the Cleveland Cavaliers or Miami Heat. The four-time MVP wanted to assure Buss he wasn't going to add to the drama the franchise was dealing with at the time.

The dinner between James and Buss came just a few weeks after the Lakers were unable to acquire Anthony Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans in what became a well-publicized, drama-filled attempt to get the Chicago native.

Here are some details of the dinner:

“We understand that things happen. We're not pointing the finger at anybody, and we're going to stay down with you,” James' agent Rich Paul, who attended the dinner along with James and Lakers executive Linda Rambis, recalled to ESPN.

“We're committed to you and we'll come out of this on top. We'll come out of this different than what the world sees. Let the people who talk, talk. We just gotta do the work.”

LeBron James told Jeanie Buss he'd long been an admirer of her late father, Dr. Jerry Buss, and how he ran the NBA's glamour franchise. He was displaying an understanding and appreciation for Lakers history that both surprised and touched Buss, according to a close associate of hers.

After Magic Johnson abruptly stepped down in April, the Lakers wound up acquiring Davis from the Pelicans in the summer of 2019. The franchise racked up the best record in the Western Conference standings this season and is four wins away from getting to the Finals for the first time since 2010.

James signed a four-year, $153.5 million maximum contract with the Lakers in the summer of 2018. He has a player option worth $41,002,273 for the 2021-22 season. The three-time champion joined the Lakers because he wanted to bring the organization back to prominence.

After missing the playoffs in James' first season with the club and all the drama with the Davis trade talks, Buss is certainty thrilled to see her team back where they belong, and with very little drama.
