Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James has led his team to the 2020 NBA Finals, but how does The King feel about playing in the 2021 Olympics?

According to a report from basketballnews.com, James would like to play in the Tokyo games. However, the uncertainty surrounding the 2020-21 NBA season has made planning for the event next to impossible:

“I was told he wants to plan on being able to play, but no one can totally commit under these circumstances,” USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo told BasketballNews.com on Thursday.

The Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee and the International Olympic Committee are planning to hold the Games July 23 through Aug. 8, 2021 — if they are indeed played. There is a bit of uncertainty due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, however. The games were actually postponed due to the virus this summer.

This creates a bit of a scheduling issue with regards to the 2020-21 NBA season, which commissioner Adam Silver is hoping to start in January of 2021. The ensuing season was first set to begin in December of this year, but its schedule was pushed back as well.

Silver acknowledged this conflict of scheduling:

“There are a lot of great US players, and we may be up against a scenario where the top-15 NBA players aren’t competing in the Olympics, but other great American players are competing,” Silver said. “And, obviously, there are many NBA players who participate in the Olympics for other countries. That’s something we’re going to have to work through… These are highly unique and unusual circumstances. And I think just as it is for the Olympic movement, it is for us as well. And we’re just going to have to sort of find a way to meld and mesh those two competing considerations.”

LeBron James, who has not competed for Team USA since the 2012 Olympics, is enjoying a fantastic season with the Lakers. Even in year 17 of his professional playing career, the former No. 1 overall pick is showing little to no signs of regression. In fact, he actually led the NBA in assists during the regular season, marking the first time he's achieved such a feat.

For now, it seems we'll have to wait and see if the Lakers superstar will be able to suit up for Team USA at the 2021 Olympics.
