Only Kawhi Leonard knows for sure how much the Los Angeles Lakers' penchant for dysfunction factored into his decision to sign with the cross-arena rival LA Clippers. As FOX Sports' Cris Carter tells it, though, the Lakers “made a lot of mistakes” while courting the reigning Finals MVP, including leaking details of his meeting with Magic Johnson.

“First, the Lakers made a lot of mistakes,” Carter said on First Things First. Magic Johnson, the intel that he let out of that meeting, that was a mistake. Now you can say, ‘Well, he's not working for the Lakers,' but he's one of the faces of the Lakers. Some of the injury that they've had in the past – Lonzo Ball, him being injured two years, Ingram, his injuries. Questions about the medical staff. How severe was the injury to LeBron James? Why'd it take him so long to come back?”

“[Co-host Nick Wright] is talking about the championships; I don't think Kawhi looked at it that way,” he continued. “The Clippers were the team to beat, and he didn't have the trust in the organization, the trust in the front office, and/or in their medical staff. That's how the Clippers were able to gain Kawhi's trust in this matter?”

Kawhi Leonard and his camp reportedly made it clear to representatives of the Lakers, Clippers, and Toronto Raptors to refrain from discussing developments in his free agency, or else. But word of Leonard's meeting with Johnson, no longer employed by the Lakers, made it out regardless, indicative of the lack of discipline that Carter – plugged into Leonard's mindset throughout free agency as much anyone in sports media – clearly believes played a factor in basketball's top free agent picking the Clippers.
