Frank Vogel has not done a very good job for the Los Angeles Lakers this season. Unfortunately, there are just no two ways of putting it.

Frank Vogel is an NBA champion coach. He won the chip with LA in his first season with the squad, and he will forever be honored for this amazing accomplishment. The harsh reality for him and the Lakers, however, is that it has all gone downhill from that point on.

The case has been so much worse this season, though. So much so, that every time it feels like the Lakers have hit rock bottom, they somehow find a way to dig a deeper hole for themselves. At this point, it's no longer a surprise that there have been calls for the front office to fire Frank Vogel as the team's head coach. For some, what's surprising is the fact that he's still sitting at the helm despite how poorly he's performed this term.

It is clear at this point that the Lakers front office still has confidence in Vogel — no matter of fickle that might be right now. As it turns out, all hope is not lost for the 48-year-old head coach in terms of saving his job. According to Sam Amick and Bill Oram of The Athletic, there is still one thing Vogel can do to potentially keep his post beyond this season:

As we reported in mid-January, Vogel was already close to being fired after the Lakers’ blowout loss at Denver on Jan. 15. With one season left on his deal, all signs point to him being replaced in the summer unless there is, in fact, a stunning playoff run in their future (as one source put it, advancing to the second round or conference finals — unlikely as that appears — would greatly improve his chances). That final decision, of course, is yet to be made.

As the above report states, Vogel nearly lost his job earlier in the season. For some reason, the Lakers front office decided to keep him on board — to ride the wave with him, so to speak. Whether or not this was the right decision or perhaps whether or not it would have made any difference if Vogel was replaced, remains uncertain. As uncertain as Vogel's job security right now up and until this coming offseason.

At the moment, the Lakers are clinging on to a play-in spot. Getting into the playoffs in itself is going to be a challenge for this squad. At this point, they are likely to face off against one of the top seeds in the Western Conference in the first round (if they even get there). This pits them against a team like the Phoenix Suns or the Golden State Warriors, which puts LeBron James and Co. at a real disadvantage. Based on what we've seen from them thus far, the Lakers might even struggle against Ja Morant and the Grizzlies.

Apparently, an appearance in the playoffs won't be enough for Vogel to keep his job. He must guide this team to the second round, at the very least. Unfortunately for him, not even that will guarantee his safety. Barring a miraculous turn of events for the Lakers, it just feels like this team is going to have a new head coach next season, if not sooner.
