The Detroit Lions appear to have found their backup quarterback. On Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter took to Twitter to announce that the Lions reached a three-year deal worth $13.05-million with free agent quarterback Chase Daniel.

As Schefter mentioned, Daniel actually beat Detroit on Thanksgiving Day in 2019 when he was with their rivals, the Chicago Bears. So they've definitely seen what he can do on the field.

Last season was a wakeup call for the Lions when it comes to a backup. Things weren't going bad for them to start the year. Through the first eight games, they were 3-4-1, very much alive in the playoff race.

However, that was with a healthy Matthew Stafford at quarterback. An injury took him out for the rest of the season, and the Lions were woefully unprepared. Their collection of backup quarterbacks couldn't lift the team up, and Detroit went 0-8 down the stretch, ending with a 3-12-1 record.

This did two things. First, it proved just how valuable Stafford is to the team. He's often argued about, as people can't decide if he's overrated or underrated. This seemed to solidify that it's hard to overrate his value though.

Second, it showed the desperate need that Detroit had for a backup. Now with Daniel, the Lions have a veteran who has proven he can help a team win games if need be.

If Stafford goes down now, things won't be perfect, but they'll be far improved. Detroit now has a backup quarterback that can help keep the team afloat while the starter is out.

Signing a backup quarterback isn't always the flashiest of moves. For the Lions though, this was much needed and could prove to be an important signing down the road.
