The Detroit Lions are a little shorthanded to start camp with the team placing big offseason acquisition Trey Flowers on the PUP list.

Flowers had minor shoulder surgery after the Super Bowl, but the expectation was it wouldn't take long to recover, so if that's the reason he is on the PUP that is a bit concerning. A player can be activated off the PUP anytime, and there is no indication about how long the team will keep him on the list.

Flowers signed a five-year, $90 million contract this off-season after being with the New England Patriots and the expectation is he will be a start of the defense.

Not everyone is so sure that Flowers is the answer for the Lions though and Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report called him the biggest risk signing for the team this offseason.

On one hand, the move appears solid. Flowers was one of the best and most versatile ends in the game last season, and he'll enter a familiar scheme under Patricia. On the other hand, there's no guarantee that his success over the last couple of years wasn't largely a product of the talent around him.

There is a history of Patriots players failing to find success with new teams. Just look at linebacker Jamie Collins, who was merely average after being traded to Cleveland.

Perhaps Flowers will give Patricia one of the pieces he needs to field a Patriots-style defense. Perhaps he won't be the same player outside of New England. Either way, the Lions took a big financial risk to find out.”

If injuries nag Flowers that could also make this a horrible signing but all signs point towards him not being on the PUP long.
