Philadelphia Eagles free agent offensive tackle Halapoulivaati Vaitai signed a five-year deal on Monday with the Detroit Lions, per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

Vaitai, 26, agreed to a contract worth $50 million with the NFC North franchise. The tackle, nicknamed “Big V,” was selected by the Eagles in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of TCU, appearing in the last 48 regular-season games for Philadelphia. Vaitai won a Super Bowl with the NFC East club two years ago.

Vaitai only appeared in 41 percent of offensive snaps for the Eagles this past season, also contributing on some snaps for Philly's special teams.

The Lions have also been linked to veteran cornerback Chris Harris Jr., who they nearly traded for back at the NFL's mid-season trade deadline in 2019.

On offense, Detroit was interested in Arizona Cardinals running back Kenyan Drake before the much-discussed NFC West club placed its franchise tag on the former Miami Dolphins rusher. The Cardinals made a splash on the first day of the NFL's free agency on Monday by trading for Houston Texans star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins in a package many though inadequate on Houston's end.

The Lions are slated with the third overall pick in next month's draft, but given the fluidity of the free agency market and various teams' situations at quarterback, it might benefit Detroit to trade back and let a team take a QB at No. 3 and reap the reward of additional picks.

For now, Vaitai will improve the Lions' offensive line as veteran gunslinger Matthew Stafford returns to the fold healthy under center.
