The Detroit Lions are hard at work to find a proven running back that can help jumpstart their disappointing ground game. Apart from former Tennessee Titans back DeMarco Murray, the Lions also have a scheduled visit from another veteran free-agent Jonathan Stewart, who is attempting to find a new home for the upcoming season.

Having spent his entire 10-year NFL career with the Carolina Panthers, Stewart was recently cut by the team in order to clear up cap space.

The 13th overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, Stewart rushed for over 1,000 yards only once in his career. Despite that strange tidbit, he still became the franchise’s all-time leading rusher with 7,318 yards.

Last season, he finished with 680 rushing yards on 198 carries with six touchdowns. His 3.4 yards per carry was easily the lowest in his entire career. He picked up just 172 yards in his last six regular-season games.

Given that running backs tend to age like milk left outside during a heatwave, it will be interesting to see how many teams are actually interested in his services. Although, he appears to be garnering attention early on this offseason as he has already met with the Seattle Seahawks.

Stewart has a few injuries behind him and also has quite a blunt force style of running, so it is hard to imagine him finding the fountain of youth at this point in his career. However, if given a limited workload, he can likely still serve as a decent rotational back and a mentor to younger players at the position.
