Matthew Stafford is attempting to return from a back injury in 2020 and he's apparently had another hiccup ahead of training camp. According to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Detroit Lions have placed Stafford on the COVID-19 reserve list.

Last season, Stafford suffered a back injury that would cause him to miss the final eight games. As a result, the veteran quarterback's streak of 136 consecutive starts with the Lions came to an abrupt halt.

Nonetheless, the Lions quarterback is returning for his 12th season in the NFL and was working his way back from his back ailment. Before his injury in 2019, the former first-round pick was on track to have one of the best seasons of his career. In his first eight starts, Stafford threw for 2,499 yards, 19 touchdowns, and five interceptions.

Sadly, while he was preparing to return to the field, Stafford has sustained a setback. Even though he's been placed on Detroit's COVID-19 reserve list, that doesn't necessarily mean he tested positive. The veteran signal-caller could have been in contact with someone that has COVID-19.

If Stafford did test positive, hopefully his wife, Kelly Stafford wasn't exposed to the disease. Before the 2019 season, it was revealed that Kelly underwent brain surgery after discovering she had a benign tumor on her brain. In addition to her surgery, Kelly also gave birth to their fourth child in June — just 14 months after undergoing surgery.

While the Lions prepare to begin training camp, Stafford could be absent from practices until he's activated from the COVID-19 list. With that being said, hopefully Stafford and his family are safe right now.
