There continues to be much speculation over just who the Detroit Lions will end up taking with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. In the big picture, they could possibly pull off a shocker on day one of the draft.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer provided some insight into the Lions’ mindset ahead of the draft. He noted that one position that has been put on his radar for Detroit with its top pick is defensive back.

Breer speculated it may be too early for the likes of Cincinnati’s Sauce Gardner, LSU’s Derek Stingley Jr. and Notre Dame’s Kyle Hamilton to be selected at this point in the draft. However, Breer does note that he has “heard they [Lions] like” Hamilton.

The Lions have already held pre-draft meetings with multiple prospects, including Hamilton. The former Notre Dame safety reportedly met with Detroit on Friday and overall, he has secured meetings with five teams in the top 10 for the NFL Draft.

Hamilton was the do-it-all safety for the Fighting Irish last season. From coverage assignments to dropping into the box to bring down running backs, he showed off his versatility as a safety over the campaign. He did not necessarily bolster his draft stock in the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine, which included logging a time of 4.59 on the 40-yard dash.

As it stands, Tracy Walker III is slated to take hold of the free safety position for the Lions in the 2022 season, while the likes of Will Harris and DeShon Elliott are options for them to be their go-to starting strong safety. Adding Hamilton into the fold sure would strengthen their depth at the safety position.
