Lonzo Ball has made a strong start to his professional career with a number of solid performances in the recently concluded Las Vegas Summer League. He recorded two-triple doubles and was named the MVP of the tournament to the delight of the Los Angeles Lakers fans.

However, team president Magic Johnson understands that the level of competition during the regular season is much higher than in the summer. That said, he made it known recently that he prefers the 19-year-old UCLA product to learn from a veteran mentor.

With Tyler Ennis being the only other point guard they currently have, this could spell trouble for him as the Lakers may waive him and sign a more experienced floor general instead.

Earlier this month, the Lakers were linked to Rajon Rondo, but they were not able to come to terms with him and he signed with the New Orleans Pelicans last week. He could’ve been the veteran they were looking for, and he has played in the playoffs multiple tiems and even won a championship in 2008. The good news for them is there are still other playmakers who have yet to be signed who could help Ball become a more mature player at his young age.

Should they be successful in signing a veteran, it would add depth to their point guard rotation and allow Jordan Clarkson to play more at the two spot. The potential addition will also benefit Ball by giving him a reliable backup during stretches that he needs to rest on the bench.

There are options for the Lakers, but it will be a matter of fit and if the salary fits on the books.
