During his run with the Atlanta Falcons, Matt Ryan did not necessarily have a consistent running game that he could lean on. Just last season, the Falcons ranked at 31st in rushing yards per game with an 85.4 average. But now with the Indianapolis Colts, the veteran quarterback is looking ahead to having a balanced offensive attack.

Ryan recently took some time to speak to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer to provide takeaways from his early run in the Colts organization. When asked on what stuck out to him over the past months when assessing the offense, he kept it simple.

“The run game,” Ryan said.

In the Falcons’ run to the Super Bowl over the 2016 campaign, the team averaged 120.5 rushing yards per game, which ranked at fifth in the league. Now as Ryan is set to anchor a Colts offense that features running backs Jonathan Taylor, Nyheim Hines, and Philip Lindsay, the one-time NFL MVP winner knows just how crucial it will be to continually involve them in pivotal snaps on the field.

“Obviously, you still have to go out there and do it, you don’t just roll out of bed and run the ball the way they did,” Ryan said. “You gotta earn it, you gotta work at it. But the potential is there. And the video evidence is there. That’s part of it, I know it’s about being a complete football team.

“And balance to me is being able to run the ball when you want to run the ball, and throw the ball when you want to throw the ball, not making it about the numbers, and then playing good defense. And all of those things excite me about this organization. I’m fired up to be here.”

Ryan built early chemistry with the offense over the past weeks at the Colts' OTAs and mandatory minicamp. Next up for the Colts will be the start of their training camp schedule in July.
