Dallas Mavericks rookie point guard Dennis Smith Jr. has accepted the league's invitation to participate in this year's Slam Dunk Contest during the 2018 NBA All-Star Weekend, according to Shams Charania of The Vertical.

The high-flying North Carolina State product shared some of his sky-walking antics through the first half of the regular season, impressing teammates and opponents with a massive lift-off at a mere 6-foot-3 frame.

Most-recently, the 20-year-old pulled off a successful two-handed 360 dunk on the break against his idol John Wall and the Washington Wizards — a clear sign he belongs in the competitions as one of the young high-risers.

Smith's quick and freakishly explosive lift-off could be one to put him in the driver's seat to win the competition, having proved his fearlessness attacking the rim throughout the 39 starts he's had thus far into his professional career.

Smith has been wowing scouts with his athleticism even before turning pro, as his lone season as a member of the Wolfpack was enough to merit an A-plus in that department — making creativity the only question mark prior to the mid-February festivities.

The Slam Dunk Contest recently got a revival in recent years with the showdown between Zach LaVine and Aaron Gordon, who despite an underwhelming showing last year, could look to come back and make three times a charm, hoping to hoist the much-evasive trophy this year.

Rookies Jayson Tatum, Donovan Mitchell, and John Collins are some potential participants that could be receiving invitations in the coming days, with a draft class that boasts plenty of hops coming into their first year in the league.
