The New York Mets initially didn't seem like a destination for a Juan Soto trade. The Washington Nationals didn't seem likely to trade their superstar to a division rival, yet New York has a chance to pull it off.

According to Andy Martino of SNY, the Mets being NL East rivals with the Nationals will likely not be a deciding factor in the trade. They are seen as one of the few teams with enough assets to land Soto, though it may take all their best names to get him.

According to industry sources, Washington views the Mets as one of a few teams that can match up on a Soto trade, and would likely begin by requesting two or three of New York’s best prospects, plus more…

…A person familiar with [Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo's] thinking said that trading within the National League East would be a potential complication, but likely not a deal breaker if the Mets are the best match.

The Mets have a very solid collection of prospects. Their prospects are highlighted by catcher Francisco Alvarez, the best prospect not yet in the major leagues according to MLB.com, as well as third basemen Brett Baty and Mark Vientos and shortstop Ronny Mauricio.

Alvarez, Baty and Vientos all have tons of value to the Mets, who need help in the positions they play. However, it would be much more beneficial to trade them for Juan Soto, who is only 23 years old and already a legendary hitter. He will be well worth the insane contract that his new team gives him.
